Dancing for Our Ancestors

Join Brandi and me as we chat debut life, honoring ancestors, the power of support and having a story that resonates with passion, and more! What a great conversation!

I AM A BON DANCER

Picture
I AM A BON DANCER is a story of culture, honoring our ancestors, and the importance of family stories and remembering. It is also a story of not letting fear have the final say, of not allowing fear to silence our voice or convince us that we are not able, not worthy, or any of the other lies it tells us.  Yes, it is also the story of a specific religious observance of a specific culture -- the Obon Festival in the Buddhist tradition.  But it is so much more than that, and it has applications that reach far beyond that. It is a story that can remind any of us that our ancestors deserve to be remembered well, and that it is our responsibility, and we cannot -- must not --let fear rob us of the privilege or the responsibility.  The illustrations add so much to the story. They are simple, but never simplistic. They have the beautiful flair of Eastern illustration -- with the bold black lines, but the spread that is simply the layers of hands of the generations dancing is absolutely beautiful in conjunction with Brandi's words. It's a beautiful marriage of text and illustration -- and one that can have vast meaning for all of us!

Tankobushi -- The Coal Miners' Song

If you'd like to use this with your kids or your classes, here is the significance of the motions.  There are additional bon dances and tutorials in the YouTube playlist if this video is not to your liking or if you prefer something for older kids.

  • Digging/Shoveling: Scooping coal with an imaginary shovel.
  • Lifting: Hoisting a heavy bag of coal over the shoulder.
  • Wiping the brow: Wiping sweat from the forehead.
  • Pushing carts: Pushing a loaded coal cart forward.

I shared the unique Kauai bon dance experience with my niece from Las Vegas. She is in a traditional Irish dance troupe and she picked up on all the bon dance moves like a pro! She also helped the West Kauai Hongwanji congregation with food prep and made Flying Saucers! Of course, she also enjoyed all the bon dance foods too. It was neat to share this with her and see how much she enjoyed herself.

I’ve been going to obon festivals in California nearly every year for the past 20 years. The first obon I ever went to was in Iwata, a town in Shizuoka Prefecture, when I was 5. Dancing at obon reminds me that I’m still very connected to my family and my roots, no matter how far I am from Japan!

That's amazing that you went in Japan! I feel the same way about feeling connected to my family and roots!

I saw this book at Talk Story Bookstore and it made me so emotional. Being born and raised on Kauaʻi I never really got introduced to bon dances until high school when I went with my friends. Now that I know a lot more of the deeper meaning and histories behind obon, and especially obon in Hawaiʻi this is a powerful and important story to pass on to future generations.

I love that you saw my book at Talk Story! I love that bookstore. I wish I got to meet you when I was there. I definitely agree that I treasure Bon dance more now that I understand its meaning.

Obon Dance Season is something that is very special in Hawaii. Brings the community closer together and is a time to see friends and family from near and far. Awesome that you wrote a book on this. Hopefully the tradition will be passed on to future generations.

Hi Jessica! Yes it is! I hope it helps. I keep hearing how many churches are closing. I really hope my book teaches the younger generations of its importance so it keeps it alive.

Industry Insights: PBJamz. On March 30, 2026 By Only Picture Books. In Bonus Goodies (from Ryan Van Cleave)
Every so often, a fifth Monday in the same month gives me a chance to do something a little different at OPB. Today, I want to shine a light on PBJamz, Tonnye Fletcher’s series on picture books with musical connections.
What I’m drawn to here is the care. I’m seeing lots of thoughtful posts that bring together writing advice, classroom tie-ins, teacher resources, writer resources, YouTube playlists, Pinterest boards, and a ton more.
And Tonnye brings real experience to the work, too. She teaches K–2 music, is National Board certified, and has a debut picture book, Music Plants Hope, coming from Reycraft Books on May 26, 2026. Yeah, a music-themed PB. Of course!
