PB (Picture Book)
Book Tasting. . .

Picture
This book is perfect for second grade.  It highlights a lot of second grade content (change over time, timelines, similes. . . ). It's a bit of a longer read-aloud.  If you choose to read it to younger kids (preschool-first grade), I would definitely preview, highlight some sections to share, and shorten the read aloud.  You can also make it a more interactive read-aloud by having the students sing along with the song(s) as they are mentioned. Second -fourth graders will gain a lot from the book, and there are many hooks that will tie in beautifully to your lessons. (See the teacher tips section for specific ideas.). If you have other ways you have used this book in your classroom or discussions with your own children, please comment below, so we can all learn and grow together.

A Little Jam . . .(the Music kind)

This is a nice orchestral version without words.  For music teachers, you could have students identify instruments, tap out tempo, etc.  For classroom teachers and families, you could use this to sing along your own happy birthday song.

Teacher tips/curriculum tie-ins

Topics of Interest:
Timelines (math connection; also author ties in with trains in the back matter)
Origins of Kindergarten (German tie-ins and Kentucky tie-ins)
Using music to teach new concept/new content
Similes (Used throughout the book!). Simile search/write your own simile/simile poems
"Eureka" vocabulary word youtu.be/-jTNMzIArJY
Change over time (social studies connections)

**Check out the links section for more connections!

Tips and Topics for Music Teachers

Topics/Activities:
Importance of copyright/ problems with piracy/giving credit where due
Variations on a theme (Happy Birthday song in the style of various composers.)
Changing lyrics as a form of variations (sisters sang many different lyrics to Happy Birthday tune.  Have students create further variations of lyrics.)
For younger kids, even the concept that every song was created by someone.

PBJamz Snack! (PBJ Cupcakes)

You can find the recipe for these delicious PBJ cupcakes here: https://kellystilwell.com/peanut-butter-and-jelly-cupcakes/  They are really delicious!  They were a big hit with my family this week! The recipe is not overly difficult and turned out just right!  Next time you have a PBJ-lover with a birthday, give these a try!  Or, you know, just make them for fun! :-)  The recipe called for raspberry jam/jelly, and that 's what I used, but you could easily substitute your favorite jelly flavor.

Note:  I made these gluten free (except for the Nutter Butter garnish).  The ones with the raspberry garnish are completely gluten free.  I used King Arthur GF flour.  Everything else was the same.  For added garnish, I added a little water to the jelly and drizzled it. I crushed peanuts for added visual interest too.

I’m PBJammin today!🎉 All of this birthday fun instantly made me think of pics from my 1 year b-day party. My b-day is in October, and I had a Jack-o-‘lantern cake with orange and black frosting. Of course, in every pic after the candle was blown out, I’m COVERED in orange and black frosting! 🥳
Thanks for the great giveaways. I’d love a chance to win the Happy Birthday Book! Congratulations Tonnye, Allison, Annie and Molly on a wonderful launch!

Oh, Happy Birthday, PBJamz! It’s actually my birthday this month. Happy Birthday to me, but of course I’m not counting them anymore! One of the most memorable was when I was still working in an office (many birthdays ago!) and so many people sent me flowers. My little office was filled. I was truly overwhelmed and felt so loved. Really nice memory.

As a teacher, who also has a summer birthday, I always hold a “Summer Birthday Bash” right before school lets out in the summer. This way all of my students are able to be recognized and showered with love and attention for their special days that do not normally get to do so like their peers who have birthdays that fall during the school year. I am also an author and would love to win a PB critique!
